Here’s What We Learnt From The Push’s Research On Young Australian Music Audiences

Source: The Push

Moshtix has been a proud supporter of The Push for over a decade, and we share their passion to ensure young people across Australia can access live music.

Last week, The Push released a report on a national survey they ran in collaboration with The Australia Institute which highlights how important the live music scene is to young Australians, and the barriers they face to access the live events they want to be at.

When introducing the report, Kate Duncan, CEO, The Push explains; “This is an important moment for the Australian music industry… This research provides us with the evidence to support what we have heard anecdotally for many years – that attending live music is overwhelmingly important to young Australians, however, as cost-of-living continues to disproportionately impact young people, communities across the country are struggling to attend concerts, gigs, and festivals.”

Commenting on these findings, Harley Evans, Managing Director, Moshtix affirms; "This research is crucial for the music industry to understand and adapt to the needs of young audiences. The Push delivers this vital information at the perfect time, and further demonstrates why Moshtix has been a huge supporter of theirs and their initiatives over the past decade."

Things we learned from the report:

Two in every three young Australians describe attending live music as important to them…

Demand for live events is high among young audiences. This finding underscores a strong connection between youth and live events, highlighting the need to consider the reported barriers to accessing live experiences.

Young Australians are discovering new music in more ways than ever before…

Audiences are looking for new ways to discover music. This presents an opportunity to engage with potential audiences across multiple platforms through our growing Affiliate network including Spotify, TikTok, Bandsintown and more.

48% of young Australians identify age as a barrier to attending the music events they want to be at…

This finding signals the need to address age-related restrictions and create more inclusive event options. By catering to younger audiences through all-ages events or tailored experiences where possible, event organisers can better capture this eager demographic and create more inclusive live experiences.

While the findings indicate that enthusiasm for live events is high, the industry must address financial and logistical barriers to keep youth audiences engaged. These findings emphasise the need for inclusive, affordable experiences and investment in youth engagement strategies to sustain a vibrant, diverse music scene in Australia.
